Crumpled but whole

A speaker started his speech by holding up a $20 bill. He asked, “Who wants this?”

Hands started going up.

He crumpled the bill, dropped it to the floor and stamped on it with his shoe. He then picked it up, crumpled and dirty and asked, “Now, who still wants this?”

Everyone’s hand still raised.

“My friends,” he said, “let this be a lesson. Others may trample upon you, but they can never diminish your true value as long as you are whole.”

Psalm 23, parsed

The Lord is my shepherd. àThat’s relationship!
I shall not want. àThat’s supply!
He makes me lie down in green pastures. àThat’s rest!
He leads me beside the still waters. àThat’s refreshment!
He restores my soul. àThat’s healing!
He leads me in the paths of righteousness. àThat’s guidance!
For His name’s sake. àThat’s purpose!
Though I walk through the valley of shadow of death. àThat’s testing!
I fear no evil. àThat’s protection!
For Thou are with me. àThat’s faithfulness!
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. àThat’s discipline!
Thou prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. àThat’s hope!
Thou anoint my head with oil. àThat’s consecration!
My cup runneth over. àThat’s abundance!
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. àThat’s blessing!
